What we do

 The mission of the Veterans Transportation Network is to improve the quality of life for Veterans by increasing access to health care through integrated and cost-effective transportation solutions. 

The Veterans Transportation Network is active at the Aleda E. Lutz Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Saginaw, and in several other communities. It is intended to assist Veterans (both inpatients and outpatients) with transportation needs to appointments. 


Eligibility Requirements for Beneficiary Travel and Veterans Transportation


Any Veteran enrolled in VA healthcare may be eligible to receive a ride from one of the options in the Veterans Transportation Program.

Beneficiary Travel Program:

VA travel pay reimbursement through the Beneficiary Travel Program may pay Veterans back for mileage and other travel expenses to and from approved health care appointments. Find out if you’re eligible and how to request reimbursement.


Veterans Transportation Network and How To Schedule a Ride:


The Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center’s Veterans Transportation Network is outlined below. Please call the phone number listed next to the location nearest you. A pick-up location will be provided, as the VA is not allowed to pick up any Veteran at his/her home.

  • From Saginaw to Ann Arbor or Detroit - There is also a VA shuttle which transports Veterans from the Aleda E. Lutz VA in Saginaw to the Ann Arbor VA Healthcare System and John D. Dingell VA in Detroit. Veterans would contact the Transportation Coordinators at 989-497-2500, Extension 13125 or 13108 to schedule a ride, or for any other transportation questions.


Veterans Transportation Ridership Guidelines


The following guidelines are provided for Veterans taking advantage of the transportation services identified. Veterans will be able to travel once criteria has been met and space is available:

  • You MUST have a scheduled appointment at the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center or any of the Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Alpena, Bad Axe, Cadillac, Cheboygan, Clare, Gaylord, Grayling, Oscoda, or Traverse City, Ann Arbor or Detroit.
  • The Veterans Canteen Service and retail store is available for you to purchase meals and/or snacks.
  • NO beverages or food are allowed on the shuttle to include alcohol.
  • If you are intoxicated or uncooperative you will not be permitted to ride.
  • You MUST notify/contact us if your appointment is cancelled, rescheduled or you make other transportation arrangements.
  • You MUST notify/contact the Transportation Coordinator at least 48 hours in advance to arrange any transportation.
  • If you use a motorized scooter or an amigo, please make us aware of this when you call, as the size of the scooter and capability to transport this equipment will need to be evaluated.
  • DAV will only transport ambulatory Veterans.
  • Also, if you require oxygen, please assure you let the Travel Coordinator know, as only certain types of oxygen can be transported with the Veteran.

Currently, everyone must wear a mask when riding in VA-provided transportation.


Checking in for departures and lodging

Veterans will be given specific information on the date, time, and location for departure. Any special lodging needs should be discussed with the Transportation Coordinator or a VA Social Worker.
